The double-wall option is recommended for the following two reasons:
1. If rodents are the main baits, the double-wall will prevent them from chewing and destroying the nooses.
2. Or if starlings are used, we also recommend the double-wall option to prevent them from snaring themselves by pulling the nooses in through the wire mesh and getting entangled (it's not fun trying to untangle one or two starlings that got caught in multiple nooses inside a bc).
BC housing material - 1/2" x 1/2" wire mesh
(painted dull black to maximize visibility of baits)
Nooses - 15# & 20# test mono:
- 15# is a good for trapping small raptors like kestrels, sharpies, and merlins.
- 20# is a good all purpose strength and stiffness for trapping medium to large hawks.
Bait - anything from mice to pigeon
- My favorite baits are two starlings or one starling & one pigeon - red-tailed's can't resist these combinations.... Single bait of either species works too, but not as effective. My experience also indicate that gerbils seem to attract red-tailed's better than mice - could be that they are more active at lower temps than mice. When the temps drop below freezing, mice tend to just curl up and don't move much.
